Would-be ATM thieves drove a van through the front of a south Fulton County Publix store early Thursday but were unsuccessful in stealing the store's cash machine.

Fulton County police Det. Melissa Parker told the AJC that the thieves drove a white panel van through the glass front of the grocery store on Cascade Road near I-285 around 2 a.m.

The van was later found abandoned behind an apartment complex across the street from the Publix store, Parker said.

Several hours later, store employees were working to clean up glass and water, and the ATM was lying on its side inside the store.

She said investigators were reviewing store surveillance tapes of the incident, which was the second unsuccessful ATM heist in metro Atlanta this week.

Early Monday, thieves stole an ATM from the lobby of the Biltmore Hotel in Midtown but dropped the cash machine on the sidewalk when they were unable to hoist it into a stolen pickup truck.
