Q: Prior to this year, when was the last time both Wimbledon singles champions were over 30? How much did Serena Williams and Roger Federer receive in prize money for their victories this year?
—Ken Kirkwood, Alpharetta
A: This year marked the first time since 1975 that both Wimbledon singles champions were at least 30 years old. Billie Jean King and Arthur Ashe were both 31 when they won Wimbledon that year. Ashe turned 32 just five days after winning his only Wimbledon title. Federer will turn 31 on Aug. 8, and Williams will be 31 on Sept. 26. Federer and Williams each received 1.15 million pounds (about $1.8 million) for winning, an increase of about 4.5 percent from the previous year. Overall, Wimbledon prize money increased 10.3 percent this year.
Q: A few weeks ago, you did a short item about the salaries of University of Georgia professors. In addition to their salaries, what are their other benefits (retirement, health insurance, etc.)?
—Riley O'Connor, Brookhaven
A: All University System of Georgia (USG) employees "are eligible to receive" standard benefits, Board of Regents spokesman John Millsaps told Q&A on the News in an email. These include several health plans that offer individual and family coverage. There are optional dental, vision, long-term disability and life insurance plans. Also, all USG employees have several retirement planning programs whose funding is shared by the University System. Employees "can elect to enroll in additional retirement programs, which are funded 100 percent by the employee," Millsaps said.
