Q: What’s with the sidewalk being built down the median from the Alabama state line toward the city? There is concrete already poured, starting at the Alabama line, and barrier barrels are in place past (State Route) 5 in Douglasville.
—Terry Carrigan, Villa Rica
A: This is not a sidewalk or a bike path. It is the concrete footing for a cable barrier system that will run the length of the median from the Alabama line to approximately milepost 34 in Douglas County, DOT spokesman Mark D. McKinnon told Q&A on the News. He said cable barrier systems have been shown to reduce fatalities and injuries that result from crossover accidents. The project is scheduled to be finished by the end of June.
