Q: Does anyone oversee the Army Corps of Engineers? They seem to have a lot of power over Lake Lanier. The lake looks bad, and they still plan to release more water? Why?
-- Christine Peters, Gainesville
A: Maj. Gen. Merdith W.B. (Bo) Temple is the acting chief of engineers and commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Maj. Gen. Michael R. Eyre is the deputy commanding general for mobilization and reserve affairs, Maj. Gen. William T. Grisoli is the commanding general for civil and emergency operations, and Maj. Gen. Jeffrey J. Dorko is the deputy commanding general for military and international operations. There also are two civilian directors. Robert E. Slockbower is the director of military programs, and Steven L. Stockton is the director of civil works. Water will continue to be released from Buford Dam (Lake Lanier) because the "Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River basin system is in a drought, and until significant rainfall occurs, we anticipate all lakes in that system will continue to decline in level," said E. Patrick Robbins, chief of legislative and public affairs of the Mobile District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
