Q: Under the new law, if a student had less than a 3.7 grade-point average in high school, but received the HOPE this past year, and they have maintained a 3.5 average in college, what will they be eligible to receive next fall?
-- Kim Elmore, Lawrenceville
A: A student who graduates from high school with at least a 3.0 GPA or has a 3.0 GPA in college will still get the HOPE scholarship. That award will be 90 percent of current tuition rates, meaning it will not cover any tuition increases. The scholarship will cover all tuition for a small group of students. To be eligible for a full-tuition scholarship, students must be the high school valedictorian or salutatorian or graduate from high school with at least a 3.7 GPA and a minimum 1200 SAT score (math and verbal only) or 26 ACT. To keep the full tuition scholarship, these students must maintain a 3.3 GPA in college.
