Teen accused of having gun at school

Aug 10, 2011

A teenager is accused of having a gun with him on the first day of school, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Montavius Howard, 17, is accused of having a Derringer handgun tucked in his waistband as Charles R. Drew High School near Riverdale let out Monday.

Howard is not a student at the school, Clayton County authorities told Channel 2.

Deputies are trying to determine if he is involved in a gang.

Maj. Jeff Mitchell of the Clayton County Sheriff's Office told Channel 2 that a school resource officer noticed Howard, who was the only teen not wearing a school uniform, standing on school grounds near students who were waiting to get on a bus.

A student also alerted the resource officer that the person in question had a gun, Mitchell said.

Howard was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on campus, criminal trespass and disrupting the operations of a public school, the report said. He is being held on a $20,000 bond.
