CNN founder Ted Turner will be part of the first class of inductees into the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
Turner, 72, former owner of the Braves and Hawks, captured the America’s Cup in 1977, sweeping Australia 4-0. “Captain Outrageous,” as he was dubbed, was named Yachtsman of the Year four times.
The inaugural class will be recognized Oct. 23 during a ceremony at the San Diego Yacht Club. A permanent Hall of Fame facility is being constructed on the waterfront in Annapolis, Md.
The 15 inductees were honored for their impact on the growth and development of the sport in the United States in one of three categories: sailing, technical, contributor.
