UPDATE: Taco Mac was re-inspected Thursday and received a 93/A. Five new violations were reported, including food debris on utensils "after the wash, rinse and sanitize process."

ORIGINAL STORY (June 5): One location of a popular metro Atlanta restaurant chain failed a recent health inspection that took place due to a food-borne illness complaint filed with the health department.

Taco Mac Metropolis, which opened in 2008, scored a 68/U following the Monday evaluation; 69 and below is considered failing. Its prior score, from January, was an 86/B.

According to the report, chicken wings, raw beef, raw tenders and raw shrimp were held at higher-than-acceptable temperatures. Those items were either discarded or placed in the freezer to blast chill.

Officials also reported that the facility requires a detailed cleaning, and that the last inspection score wasn’t properly posted.

Representatives for Taco Mac responded to questions from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution with the following statement attributed to CEO Greg Lippert:

“We had a compressor failure in a refrigerator unit that was repaired that day. We have asked the health department to come back and re-inspect immediately. Our focus on keeping our restaurants safe and clean for our guests is reflected in our scores across the Atlanta market.”

Follow-up inspections are generally completed within 10 days of the original evaluation.
