Sutton Middle School's PTA co-presidents said Wednesday Atlanta schools Superintendent Beverly Hall risked being seen as having a "lack of commitment" to their community if she did not soon decide where she wants to build a new high school in Buckhead.
The open letter from Reide Onley and Leigh Darby follows controversy over potential sites for the new campus, which Atlanta officials announced in early February as a solution to relieve Sutton's overcrowding.
A community advocate said three weeks ago that the school system had sent a letter to the owner of the Paces Apartments complex in Buckhead Village suggesting they may seize his property through eminent domain. The possibility angered neighbors, who said the 30-acre complex was too close to busy roads.
In a separate interview, Onley said parents wanted a final decision on a site, no matter where it was located. He said parents felt the success of Sutton was at a tipping point: The campus, which is accredited as an International Baccalaureate school, has attracted additional students at a time when Atlanta has closed schools in other communities because of underenrollment. They want to maintain that momentum, he said.
