Deputies are still looking for a 25-year-old man on probationer who fled while on his way to the Clayton County jail, Sgt. Sonja Sanchez said Tuesday morning.

Darius A. Smith, 25 and Harry Wicks III, 18, are charged with obstruction by fleeing and violating their probation.

The two men were at the Sentinel Probation office in Jonesboro on Wednesday waiting for deputies to pick them up, Clayton County Sheriff’s Major Jeff Mitchell said.

“When our deputy arrived at their office to take them in to custody, both subjects fled the area on foot,” said Mitchell, commander of the sheriff's enforcement division. “A search was done of the area to include checking home addresses, with no results.

The two men ran out the door as the deputy was pulling up, said Steve Queen, vice president of operations for Sentinel. Clayton pays Sentinel to oversee probationers for the county, Queen said.

Wicks turned himself in later that day, Mitchell said.

Smith is described as 6-feet-1 inch tall and 185 pounds.

Court records show Wicks is on probation for loitering and Smith is on probation for aggravated assault.
