Police said the suspect in a double stabbing killed himself after stabbing his ex-wife to death and critically injuring her mother.
According to police, the incident began as a domestic dispute between a husband and wife around 2 p.m. Thursday.
Police said the man started stabbing his ex with a kitchen knife inside the home on Chris Lake Drive. The incident spilled into the street, where witnesses reported hearing screams for help.
One witness said she saw a woman come to rest under a tree following the stabbing. The woman, who was identified as the man’s ex wife, died at the scene according to police.
Witness Leon Hughes said he just happened to walk out of his garage to see the man attacking a woman.
"What I saw was the gentleman stabbing the lady, he was just repeatedly stabbing her," Hughes said.
That's when Hughes says he knew he had to do something.
"When I saw him stab her, that's when I drew my weapon. I told him to back off of her and leave her alone and, 'Drop your knife.' He did, he backed off and started walking away," Hughes said.
But Hughes said that created another problem. That allowed a killer to get away. Hughes said the man started to drive off. That's when Hughes fired a shot hitting the car. But the man escaped and lead police on a manhunt.
The manhunt ended about 10 miles away at the Norcross Gun Club where police say the suspect shot himself.
Another witness said he left three young children parentless.
"The 2-year-old, she was on my hand for an hour and a half screaming saying, 'Mommy.' And during all this she was inside by herself," the witness said.
That witness said she saw the suspect ringing the doorbell and pacing the stairs before someone let him into the home.
No one expected the outcome.
"Confusion, shock. It's surreal," Hughes said.
