Decatur Superintendent David Dude has whittled the list of 44 applicants down to two candidates for Clairemont Elementary principal. Current Principal Erin Wheeler Gutfreund, who’s been the school’s head for six years, and spent 16 years with City Schools Decatur, recently announced her resignation, effective end of the year.

Dude said both candidates have extensive experience, one as a principal and the other as assistant principal, and both come from outside the system.

This is Dude’s first principal hiring since becoming superintendent last November. All nine CSD principals were hired by his predecessor Phyllis Edwards and all but one—Renfroe Middle School’s first-year principal Jonathan Clark—has extensive CSD service.

Dude, who’s still conducting reference checks, said he plans making his decision next week.
