Sugar Hill testing severe weather sirens on Wednesday

If you hear a siren in Sugar Hill on Wednesday, you probably don’t have to run for cover.

The city is testing its severe weather sirens on June 5 at noon. The sirens are used to alert residents in case of the immediate danger of severe weather systems including tornadoes.

Sugar Hill will test the sirens the first Wednesday of each month going forward. If bad weather occurs, the testing will be postponed until the following week in order to prevent confusion or unnecessary panic, the city said in a Facebook post.

Sugar Hill has seven severe weather sirens located throughout the city. The city received a grant in 2018 to update the sirens, including software upgrades. The sirens are automatically activated when the National Weather Service issues a severe weather warning.
