According to a truly odd little study, Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons fans are some of the worst at spelling, grammar and punctuation compared with backers of other Major League Baseball and National Football League teams.
Falcons fans are 10th worst out of 32 NFL clubs, while Braves fans are 9th worst among 30 MLB clubs.
The findings come from Grammarly, an automated-proofreading company which conducted its research for The Wall Street Journal.
The firm analyzed 150 reader comments from the news section of each team’s website, looking for errors.
Braves fans made 10.2 spelling and grammar mistakes per 100 words. Not good, but at least that was better than the worst of the worst — Mets fans — who committed 13.9 mistakes per 100 words. Phillies fans were right behind at 13.5 mistakes. (Maybe it’s an NL East thing).
Indians fans exhibited by far the best command of the English language with only 3.6 mistakes per 100 words.
Falcons fans did better than Braves fans with 8 mistakes per 100 words. And they went far beyond the spelling and grammatical capabilities of Redskins fans who made 16.5 mistakes per 100 words, easily the worst in football.
Still, they were no match for Lions fans who made only 4.2 mistakes.
When the numbers for baseball and football fans in each city were combined, the victor of verbal turned out to be Cleveland, followed by San Diego. Atlanta lagged.
No study of NBA fans was mentioned by the Journal. Maybe Hawks fans would do the city proud. Then again, there may be a reason why the name on the front of some of their uniforms doesn’t go beyond ATL.
