The Marietta City Council approved a rezoning application on Sept. 12 from The Stonehaven School, enabling it to move forward with plans announced last year to open an upper school in August 2020.

According to the school’s plans, the 2020-21 school year will see a ninth-grade class enrolled and another grade added each year until the school offers 12th grade for the 2023-24 school year with a maximum capacity of 360 students.

“This marks a tremendous step forward in our efforts to fulfill a significant need expressed by many of our families who want an expanded classical Christian school to serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade,” said Gordon Hwang, chairman of Stonehaven’s Board of Trustees, in a statement.

Stonehaven moved its campus from Smyrna to Marietta in 2013 and is now seeking to make central Marietta its long-term home.

“We listened to the concerns of the neighbors and worked with the Public Works Department to revise traffic patterns in response to their input,” said Head of School Brett Edwards. “We are looking at a phased approach from our current location to the new property nearby at 521 Atlanta St.”

Presently, the school of 120 students meets at GracePointe Marietta Baptist Church at 505 Atlanta St.
