The Space Shuttle Atlantis will not be Atlanta’s newest tourist attraction.
Instead, NASA officials announced Tuesday afternoon, the shuttle will be docked at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
A non-profit group, Atlanta City of Peace, Inc. had hoped the retired shuttle would be the centerpiece of a proposed $200 million Global Peace Museum in College Park. The non-profit group staged a rally in favor of luring the shuttle to the area Monday and said the proposed site was near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and the Georgia International Convention Center.
The three other retired shuttles will be displayed at existing scientific and air museums; the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the California Science Center in Los Angeles and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.
