Soldier's body returns to Georgia
The body of a Georgia soldier who died in combat last week returned to his home state Saturday.
Army Pfc. Brandon D. Goodine, 20, of Luthersville, died June 7 after his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device in Maiwand, Afghanistan, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Goodine was a paratrooper in the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. His body arrived at Atlanta Regional Airport Falcon Field in Peachtree City at about 9:45 a.m.
Visitation will be held Sunday at Haistien Funeral Home in McDonough from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Goodine's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethany Baptist Church in McDonough. Following the funeral he will be buried at Eastlawn Cemetery in McDonough.
Goodine completed high school and joined the U.S. Army a little more than a year ago. He is a is a graduate of Greenville High School and attended Henry County High School.
Military service is a tradition in Goodine’s family. His older brother serves in the Army and his cousin is in the Air Force. Goodine left for Afghanistan last October for a year-long tour of duty.
Among others, Goodine leaves behind a wife he married just 10 months ago, Nicole Goodine, a 3-year-old daughter, Katie Goodine, and his mother, Mandy Watson.
