The slight chance of snow that was earlier predicted for metro Atlanta this week might not pan out, but one thing’s for certain – the coldest air since last winter will rush into north Georgia by mid-week.

The National Weather Service has posted a freeze watch for areas of the state as far south as Griffin, in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.

“Once that cold gets in here, it’s going to sit here for a little while,” Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said.

Forecasters over the weekend had predicted that a few flurries could accompany the cold air across much of north Georgia, including metro Atlanta, Tuesday night, but it appears that moisture will be limited, with any showers late Tuesday ending before the cold air pushes into the state.

“Some spots in the mountains might see a snow flurry or two, but I don’t really see the precipitation picking up here,” Minton said.

Minton said highs will be in the mid-60s Monday and low 60s Tuesday, but winds gusting to 30 mph Tuesday afternoon will push the cold air into the state by nightfall.

Temperatures Tuesday night will drop into the upper 20s across metro Atlanta, “and with the breeze, it will feel more like the teens out there,” Minton said.

Temperatures Wednesday afternoon will struggle to make it into the upper 40s, Minton said, then plunge back to around 27 Thursday morning.

A late week warm-up will send highs back into the 60s by the weekend, according to Minton.
