A new amendment to Snellville's noise ordinance would limit how late locals are allowed to shoot fireworks.

Under the proposed amendment, which is expected to be approved by the city council next month, the use of fireworks between the hours of 9:01 p.m. and midnight would be prohibited. Fireworks would still be allowed during that window on Jan. 1, July 3, July 4 and Dec. 31. They'd also be allowed between midnight and 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.

In another fireworks-related action, the Snellville city council approved Monday a zoning ordinance amendment to regulate the location of fireworks sales. The amendment includes prohibiting consumer fireworks retail sales facilities, but not consumer fireworks retail sales stands, within the Town Center Overlay District.

Recent state legislation regulates the sale of fireworks and allows local governments to enact or enforce local noise ordinances as a way to restrict the usage of fireworks.
