The Snellville City Council recently passed an amendment to the city’s billboard ordinance that they hope will eventually reduce the number of billboards in the city. Snellville currently has nine billboards.

The amendment will allow currently existing, non-conforming billboards on Ga. 124 and U.S. 78 to be replaced with an electronic one. Billboards that are completely removed have up to one year to be replaced. New electronic signage cannot be any taller or larger than the previous billboard, and the sign face cannot exceed 672 square feet. Animation, flashing, blinking, and video images are prohibited.

Sign brightness must be automatically adjusted with ambient lighting and be able to show Amber Alerts or other local emergency messages deemed necessary by the Snellville Police Department.

“We definitely anticipate we are going have a reduction of signs within the city by doing this,” said City Attorney Chuck Ross.
