The Smyrna City Council voted 5-2 Aug. 20 to award a $185,000 contract for the Smyrna History Museum Renovation Project.
Opposed were Andrea Blustein and Susan Wilkinson who did not offer their reasons.
In favor were Maryline Blackburn, Ron Fennel, Tim Gould, Derek Norton and Charles Welch.
Winning the contract was Building Four Fabrication of Chamblee, the second lowest bidder, with more than 30 years combined of exhibit design and fabrication experience.
To be completed by spring, the work will include a complete renovation with exhibit design at 2861 Atlanta Road.
Most recently, Building Four has worked on the temporary exhibit “Barbecue Nation” at the Atlanta History Center and been rehired by the Atlanta History Center to complete the critical restoration of the diorama for the Cyclorama project.
Welch said he looks forward to schools bringing children to the museum once it is renovated with seven stations based on a timeframe of the city’s history.
Fennel said this decision is “a seminal moment” in the city’s history.
Also, Fennel commended the city’s former mayor, Harold Smith, for his continuing efforts to keep the narrative of the city’s history alive.
