A Georgia city that has its roots in the Civil War now has a more recent distinction to call its own.

Pooler, which is in Chatham County near Savannah, has been named the smartest city in Georgia. The honor was bestowed recently by Zippia.com, which touts itself as a career-oriented information website.

The city of about 21,000 was selected because it has almost no high school dropouts and only 5.3 percent of the population lacking a high school diploma, according to Zippia. The data came from the U.S. Census, Zippia added.

This ranked Pooler ahead of such metro Atlanta cities as Alpharetta (No. 2), Johns Creek (No. 6), and Duluth (No. 9).

The top city had a median household income of about $67,700 in 2013, ahead of the statewide figure of $47,800, according to city-data.com.

According to the City of Pooler website, the community happened to be a nighttime stopover site for Union Gen. William T. Sherman and his troops on Sherman's historic march to Savannah in 1864.
