A small, private school in Cherokee County is closing its doors, citing the poor economy as the reason.

Woodstock International School, located on Hickory Flat Highway, told parents in a letter Friday the school would not re-open Monday, Channel 2 Action News reported. The school, which educated students ages 3-12, had just completed the second week of summer camp when it announced the closing.

The school was locked Monday and a woman who answered the door declined to speak to an AJC reporter. No one answered the phone at the school Monday afternoon.

Court records show the school is scheduled to be auctioned in front of the Cherokee County courthouse to recover more than $1.5 million in debt, Channel 2 reported. The owners owe more than $11,000 in back taxes, records show.

The school reimbursed parents for any tuition paid. But one parent, Christian Rhode, told Channel 2 he's still out $500 in uniform costs.
