A northwest Georgia kindergarten class returned to school Tuesday, but without the two women who have greeted them for weeks. A teacher and her assistant were among three people killed in a Floyd County crash, according to police.
Christi Carver Mooney, 45, was a kindergarten teacher at Glenwood Primary School and Marsha Lynn Sammons Coleman, 60, was a paraprofessional in Mooney’s classroom.
Late Friday, Mooney was driving a Lincoln Sedan and Coleman was a passenger when their car was hit by a pickup truck on Ga. 140, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Mooney and Coleman, both of Rome, both died in the wreck.
Ricardo Clarke, 30, of Rome was also killed, according to investigators. Clarke was driving a pickup that crossed the center line and struck the Lincoln. He worked at both the Chick-fil-A Dwarf House in Rome and the Lowe's Distribution Center, the Rome News-Tribune reported.
Additional teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, office staff, lunch room workers, maintenance staff and central office personnel were at Glenwood on Tuesday to assist students and staff members, the Glenwood principal told the Rome newspaper.
“There will be staff from every primary and elementary school in the system and assistance from counselors from across the system,” said Jill Shepherd, principal at Glenwood. “This is a wonderful gesture that will allow us to have as normal a day as possible for children and allow our staff to work through this difficult time together.”
A funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in Rome for Mooney, who is survived by her husband of 24 years and a daughter, her online obituary states. A memorial service will be held Saturday at Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church in Rome for Coleman, who is survived by two sons, according to her obituary.
Services for Clarke will be Sunday at Christ Temple Holiness Church at 3 p.m.
