School officials say no asbestos problem at construction site

The DeKalb County School District says federal officials confirmed they violated no safety precautions while handling asbestos at a construction site.

The fire-retardant, which can cause lung damage if inhaled, had to be removed from Dunwoody High School during a recent construction project. At least one neighbor expressed concerns that dust from the site contained asbestos particles, said school spokesman Walter Woods.

But he said U.S. Environmental Protection Agency monitors gave DeKalb "a clean bill of health" for its handling of the material, which was wrapped in protective bags and hauled away Wednesday.
