No students were hurt in a wreck Friday morning that sent an Atlanta Public Schools bus driver to the hospital.

The bus ran off Custer Avenue near Moreland Avenue shortly before 7:30 a.m., and ran through the iron fence surrounding the Manor V apartment complex.

According to school system spokesman Keith Bromery, the bus was transporting nine special needs students to Benteen and Centennial Place elementary schools, Washington High School and the Imagine Wesley International Academy charter school.

"While some of the students were shaken up by the accident, none were injured," Bromery said.

Another bus responded to the scene and took the students to their schools.

The female bus driver was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for observation.

Richard Adkins lives in one of the apartments at the complex.

“I was sleeping and I heard something go ‘boom,’” Adkins told the AJC. “I thought somebody had a bomb.”

Nada London, sales manager for the apartments, said the bus driver “looked like she banged her head pretty bad.”

London said students from the bus told her that “they felt wobbling and then the bus just went out of control and hit the fence.”
