SATURDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Independence Day starts off sunny, hot

Here's Meteorologist Eboni Deon with a look at your forecast.

Metro Atlanta is heating up quickly Saturday morning ahead of this afternoon’s Fourth of July festivities.

It's expected to reach 90 degrees in the city, but the heat index will make it feel like 95, making it a great day to cool off at the pool or lake — keeping in mind social distancing and other safety measures during the pandemic.

“It is going to be another scorcher as you head out and about,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. “Make sure you are staying hydrated as you celebrate the holiday.”

While isolated storms are possible this afternoon, this year’s Independence Day is not expected to be a complete washout, according to the latest forecast. Even so, it might be best to have an indoor backup plan, just in case.

“Getting out on the grills? You may want to do that early, Deon said. “We are watching for afternoon storms to fire up.”

A few isolated showers are possible in far North Georgia about 11 a.m., according to the latest forecast. Those showers are expected to make their way through metro Atlanta later this afternoon, where there is a 30% chance of rain.

“With the storms that do develop, we could be dealing with some heavy downpours,” Deon said, so it might be best to keep that umbrella handy.

The good news, she said, is that the rain is expected to move out just in time for this evening’s fireworks displays.

Drivers shouldn’t have to deal with much construction on Atlanta’s interstates this weekend. The Georgia Department of Transportation is restricting lane closures statewide through 10 p.m. Sunday for the holiday.

There are several protests planned across the city this afternoon, however, which could cause traffic delays for some motorists in those areas.
