The Oakhurst Fifth Avenue 5K and Mayors’ Mile is Saturday, the 5K beginning at 9 a.m. in front of the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue, 101 Fifth Avenue, Decatur. The Mayor’s Mile one-mile run starts at 9:45 a.m. in front of Steinbeck’s Ale House at 659 East Lake Drive.

Both races end at Harmony Park, meaning the heart of Decatur’s Oakhurst Village will close most of the morning.

A fall race has been held in Oakhurst for around 20 years. But this year’s event likely features the largest gathering of former Decatur mayors in one spot ever. Scheduled to attend and walk/run are Bill Breen (mayor in the 1960s), Walt Drake (1975-1976), Ann Crichton (first woman mayor, 1977-1979), Michael Mears (1985-1993), Elizabeth Wilson (first African-American mayor, 1994-1998), Bill Floyd (possibly the longest-serving mayor, 1998-2013) and Jim Baskett (2013-2015).

Current Mayor Patti Garrett is out of town and can’t attend.

Registration is $30 adults for the 5K and Mayor’s Mile, $25 for 18U (both races) and $20 for the Mayor’s Mile only.
