The Sandy Springs City Council has approved a law enforcement mutual aid and assistance agreement with the neighboring city of Dunwoody, pledging police cooperation on issues ranging from parades to civil disturbances to natural and man-made disasters.

The agreement also says the cities can call on each other to help investigate crimes and motor vehicle accidents, among other tasks, according to a staff report to the council.

“The agreement establishes policies and procedures to be followed when a request for assistance is made by either city for either emergency or non-emergency situations,” staff said. “In the event of a request, the chief of the city receiving the request will assess resources and will provide personnel, equipment and specialized units to the extent possible without jeopardizing primary services to its own community.”

Each city will be responsible for its own employee’s compensation and benefits, and there will be no liability imposed for failure to respond. The agreement runs through Dec. 31 and automatically renews annually.
