Sandy Springs has a new city attorney: Daniel W. Lee, a former state senator and a lawyer with more than 25 years of expertise in government law and professional liability, Mayor Rusty Paul announced Tuesday.
Lee served three terms in the Senate and is a partner with the firm Freeman Mathis & Gary LLP. He will succeed Wendell Willard, Sandy Springs’ attorney since its incorporation in 2005 and a Republican who represents the 51st House District in the state Legislature. Willard is retiring as city attorney July 1.
While the city attorney is appointed by the mayor, the supporting legal staff is secured through a procured contract agreement. Freeman Mathis was one of six firms that responded to the city’s request for qualifications.
“We could not have had a better, more respected attorney lead us in the first 12 years of existence,” Paul said of Willard. “Not only has he managed the city’s legal affairs successfully, he has helped the city enormously through his legislative skills at the state Capitol.”
Willard said, “I can leave knowing that Sandy Springs is in good legal hands with Dan.”
