Sandy Springs reached nearly 2,000 miles west to find a new city manager, a candidate with more than 28 years of municipal experience.

Andrea Surratt, a North Carolina native who currently is city manager in Bozeman, Mont., was confirmed for her new role Tuesday by the Sandy Springs City Council. She succeeds John McDonough, the North Fulton municipality’s first manager who left in August to take the same job in Greenville, S.C.

Surratt will join Sandy Springs, a community of more than 100,000, in early 2020, with an annual base salary of $222,000, according to a city announcement. Information: https://bit.ly/364blW3

In Bozeman, population 46,596, Surratt has overseen a $118.8 million annual budget and 427 employees. She previously served with several North Carolina cities, including 10 years as assistant city manager of Hickory.

Surratt has a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Clemson University and a bachelor’s in political science from Guilford College. She and her husband Robert are parents of two college-age children.

“Cities are strengthened by meaningful community discussions about growth, neighborhood preservation, revitalization, and inclusive community identity,” Surratt said. “I look forward to working with the Sandy Springs City Council, citizens and staff to shape this young city, originally envisioned by Eva Galambos, into an uncommon and timeless community.”
