Transportation matters took center stage during Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul’s annual State of the City address Tuesday morning.

Paul called on the Georgia General Assembly to allow voters to consider a sales tax plan that would fund a MARTA extension up the Ga. 400 corridor through Alpharetta. The mayor noted a study that found more than two-thirds of Sandy Springs residents would consider options other than their cars if they were timely and efficient.

Paul also called Gov. Nathan Deal’s allocation of money for the reconstruction of the Interstate 285/Ga. 400 interchange and managed lanes “a great gift.” And he lauded county commissioners and fellow Fulton mayors for using provisions of the state’s Transportation Funding Act to work toward a regional road, trail and bike transportation network.

The mayor spoke to more than 200 community and business leaders at a local hotel.
