Having recently amended city ordinances to provide for the designation of a chief judge of the municipal court, the Sandy Springs City Council has affirmed Mayor Rusty Paul’s nomination of Donald Schaefer to a two-year term in that role.
Schaefer has been a municipal judge in Sandy Springs and he also is a judge in Johns Creek. He may continue to serve both communities, as judges are contracted to serve under the public-private model used by the two cities, a Sandy Springs spokeswoman said.
Schaefer is in private practice in Roswell and previously was with the Decatur law firm of Brownlow and Schaefer for more than 26 years, specializing in traffic and criminal law and wills and estates. He has been a judge pro hac vice in Atlanta and a part-time judge in Alpharetta, Loganville and the DeKalb County Recorder’s Court.
The Sandy Springs municipal court conducts arraignments in applicable traffic and criminal misdemeanor cases, holds bench trials, and adjudicates alleged violations of city environmental, building and development codes. Felonies, certain criminal misdemeanors and jury trails go to Fulton County State Court.
