Sandy Springs calls hearing on noise, fireworks

The Sandy Springs City Council has recognized four state-mandated holiday periods when residents can set off fireworks.
Now, it’s called a public hearing for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at City Hall, 1 Galambos Way, to talk about and decide fireworks usage the rest of the year.
Consumer fireworks in Sandy Springs can be fired off between 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 1; the last Saturday and Sunday in May; July 3 and 4; the first Monday in September, and Dec. 31, the council recently decided. Additionally, fireworks are permitted between midnight and 1 a.m., Jan. 1.
Other days, fireworks are allowed from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., subject to the Sandy Springs municipal code.
“The action by the council was to regulate fireworks via decibel meter rates and the city’s noise ordinance,” City Attorney Dan Lee said in an email. “This is a two-step process that requires the city to ‘re-enact’ its noise ordinance. … There is some indication that the use-permit method of enforcement would be preferred, and the council may revisit the choice of enforcement method.”
