With this the final month you can buy an electric car in Georgia and still receive a $5,000 state tax credit, there’s been a rush on Nissan Leafs at one Gwinnett County car dealership.

Stone Mountain Nissan only has 30 to 40 of the all-electric vehicles left with people trying to take advantage of the deal.

“That has been the main motivating factor for the sale of this vehicle over the last couple of years,” says Used Car Manager Kelly Hoban.

He says the state tax credit combined with a federal tax credit of $7,500 made leasing the Leaf almost “free” for some.

At one point, the dealership was selling 100 of the vehicles a month.

Now, it will not order any more once its inventory is depleted. Hoban tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish they will wait to see what the demand is like after July 1.

“There will still be a market for the vehicle but probably not in those great numbers; and before we have large amounts of this vehicle in inventory, we want to kind of sensor what that market will be,” he says.

The elimination of the tax credit on low emission and zero emission alternative fuel vehicles is part of the massive transportation funding bill passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor this year. Hybrid vehicles are not affected.

The new law also requires owners of alternative fuel vehicles to pay an annual user fee of $200, $300 for commercial vehicles.
