Voters narrowed the field Tuesday in the race to fill the Georgia House of Representatives District 24 seat.

Lanier Tech instructor Sheri Gilligan received 1,785 votes, or 49.97 percent of the total. Second-place finisher David Van Sant drew 877 votes, or about 24.5 percent. Ethan Underwood and Will Kremer trailed the all-Republican field.

A July 14 runoff appears likely between Gilligan and Van Sant, but elections supervisor Barbara Luth says with Gilligan polling so close to the 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff, three provisional ballots and one possible overseas absentee ballot could tip the balance. The county’s election board will consider those ballots as it meets to certify election results Friday. State certification of the results is scheduled for Monday, said Luth.

The winner will fill the final 18 months of former State Rep. Mark Hamilton’s term. The Republican from Cumming stepped down last month to relocate to Tennessee.
