Roswell has announced the start of an approximately $329,000 project to construct a pedestrian crossing with a raised median island and signalized beacons at Houze Road (Ga. 140) and Saddle Creek Drive.

Saddle Creek Drive serves the Saddle Creek subdivision, and crossing Houze at this location is difficult, as the highway sees about 16,000 vehicles a day, officials said. Work began Monday, March 4, and is to be completed by Memorial Day.

The crosswalk will have Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons to “more aggressively alert motorists” to the presence of pedestrians, according to the announcement. The signals are the same type as those installed at the Hembree Road roundabout about a quarter-mile to the south.

When a pedestrian pushes a button to activate the beacon, alternating flashing patterns will illuminate. State law requires vehicles to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, Roswell said. After pedestrians have crossed, vehicles may proceed, and the beacons will automatically shut off.
