Students at a Roswell school recently decided to take a different approach in honoring the thousands of lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Staff and students at The Cottage School unveiled their massive 9/11 art and memorial project earlier this week, which featured more than 3,000 mini American flags distributed across grassy areas outside its multipurpose center. Each flag represents the name of every person who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard United Airlines Flight 93.
Middle School principal Julie Crudgington said the project’s elaborate planning and development started last March by brainstorming with local parents and teachers. About 170 students began preparing the grids and designing the flags in early August.
Teachers combined the project activities with classroom discussions on the international and domestic impacts of the terrorist attacks.
Crudgington was a high school teacher at the school in 2001, and said many of her current middle school students were not even born when the attacks occurred. She said the project is about honoring the brave, respecting the past, and encouraging her students to value each other.
“It’s one of those history lessons you can’t just teach from a book,” she said. “Even if you didn’t know your neighbor, you knew your neighbor that day.”
