Responding to recent attacks on police around the country, the Roswell City Council this week approved buying 147 “active shooter kits” to outfit officers with potentially life-saving equipment.

A Roswell spokeswoman described the gear as “two pieces of equipment for officers — a ballistic helmet and a ballistic vest, both of which are designed to stop a rifle round.”

Dana Safety Supply Inc. submitted the lowest quote, of $573.26 per unit or $84,269.22 total, for the kits, according to the agenda packet for Monday’s Council meeting. The kits are to be used by Roswell police, municipal police, park police and probation officers.

Each kit consists of a helmet, a rifle plate carrier vest, two steel rifle plates and a carry bag. The cost of the kits will be covered by fiscal 2016 operating savings in the Police Department budget.
