The Roswell City Council has advanced a measure allowing automated cameras to detect speeding motorists in school zones, and approved a contract with RedSpeed Georgia LLC to install and operate the devices.

The council accepted on first reading an ordinance allowing the use of speed detection cameras; second reading is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26.

The measure lists 15 school speed zones in the city; requires signs advising drivers of the speed cameras; says only civil warnings, not citations, will be issued the first 30 days after the devices are introduced; and sets fines of $75 for the first violation and $125 for subsequent violations, in addition to a fee of up to $25.

The council also approved a five-year agreement with RedSpeed to install, operate and maintain the speed cameras, earning a $25 fee to be paid by the violator.

Roswell police asked RedSpeed to conduct speed evaluations at six schools: Hembree Springs, Mountain Park, Sweet Apple and Vickery Mill elementary; Holcomb Bridge Middle; and Roswell High, staff said.
