A Bastrop man was killed Saturday night in a rollover crash, according to Bastrop police officers.

The single-car crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of Texas 71, police said. The driver was identified as 69-year-old Richard Sterling of Bastrop, who was airlifted to University Medical Center Brackenridge where he was pronounced dead, according to reports.

Police said the initial investigation indicates that the rear tire on the driver’s side blew out, causing the vehicle to hit the embankment and roll over. The driver was ejected through the driver’s side window, according to the police report.

No other vehicles or persons were involved in the accident, police said, adding that an investigation was still pending as of Monday afternoon.

Bastrop County Sheriff’s deputies and Bluebonnet Volunteer Fire Department assisted Bastrop police at the crash scene.
