The owner of a Jamaican eatery in southwest Atlanta chose not to close the facility and take care of code violations after failing a second consecutive routine health inspection.

Fulton County health officials asked Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Eatery, 4454 Campbellton Road, Atlanta, to voluntarily close after scoring 47/U on a recent inspection. There were numerous repeat violations of several health codes, including not having a certified food manager on site.

Points were taken off because potentially hazardous foods were again being improperly thawed at room temperature, and employees were not date-marking prepared foods for disposal. Two large containers of frozen raw chicken and oxtails were on a counter in the kitchen.

Among other previously cited problems, a pipe was leaking under the prep sink with water draining onto the floor. Also, one of the toilets was still not working.

Points were again taken off because of soiled equipment and food containers. The reach-in cooler and freezer were dirty with residue, and the grill hood had an accumulation of grease, the inspector said.

In other code violations, employees were not washing their hands before putting on gloves or when switching tasks. The inspector said no one washed their hands during the three-hour inspection, which began at 12:30 p.m. The inspector said the hand sink was “bone dry.”

Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Eatery will be re-inspected. The restaurant failed a routine health inspection in May, scoring 63/U, then pulled it up to a 92/A with the follow-up inspection.
