For the second time this year, Hong Kong King Buffet in Norcross failed a routine inspection with multiple food safety violations, so health officials suspended the food permit.

The Gwinnett County inspector said more managerial oversight is needed to ensure safe food operations and employees needed more training.

For example, frozen shrimp was thawing in a container of water on the floor underneath a three-compartment sink. Dishes were being washed in the sink and water was leaking into the container with the shrimp.

Also, the inspector said a pan that had been used for raw beef was tilted over washed vegetables. Juices from the pan could have dripped onto the vegetables, the inspector said.

It was the fifth consecutive time the restaurant had points taken off for improper separation of food and not protecting against cross-contamination of bacteria.

Hong Kong King Buffet, 5905 Jimmy Carter Blvd., Norcross, scored 32/U. The restaurant had a 48/U on a routine inspection earlier this year before pulling it up to 90/A on the follow-up inspection.

Among other violations, dishes and vegetable cleavers were stored as clean but were still dirty with food debris. Frozen crab was left out on a counter to thaw at room temperature. It was moved to a cooler.

Several gallons of milk had expired. Celery was being cut without having been washed. Boxes of non-food items were stored on the floor.

Also, the facility needed cleaning and repairs made to floor tiles and walls.

Hong Kong King Buffet will be re-inspected after a compliance conference with health officials.

In other news, a recently featured restaurant from DeKalb County, Dish Dive, 2233 College Ave., Atlanta, scored 89/B on a follow-up inspection.
