When Gwinnett County police rolled up to an early morning apartment fire near Norcross early Monday, they found residents leaping to safety from the second floor of the building.

One person was slightly injured in the blaze, which was reported just after 2 a.m. at the Sinclair apartments in the 2200 block of Park Colony Drive, according to Gwinnett fire Lt. Jerrod Barrett.

Eight units in the building were heavily damaged by the fire, he said.

“This is an older-style building, so it did not have any firewalls in place to keep the fire from spreading from one unit to another,” Barrett told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It actually had a common attic, so [the] fire spread pretty quickly.”

He said one person was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries sustained in the fire.

No other injuries were reported and all occupants had been accounted for, Barrett said.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the approximately 20 people displaced by the fire, spokeswoman Sherry Nicholson said.

“The Red Cross is providing essentials such as food, clothing, shoes and lodging and will continue to work with the families this week to help them get back on their feet,” she said.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined, Barrett said.
