A Georgia state representative used a Newton County road crew to spread sand on his driveway, according to a published report. But he still didn't make it to the Capitol for the start of the legislative session Monday.
Rep. Doug Holt, R-Social Circle, called the county commission chair Monday and asked for a list of contractors, the Newton Citizen reported. Chairman Kathy Morgan offered Holt help from a Newton public works crew, according to the report.
Morgan told the newspaper she ordered a crew to finish their current project first before going to Holt's home. Holt agreed to reimburse the county for the work.
“I feel like he is an employee of the county," she told the newspaper. "Even if he’s not technically a county employee, he is an employee of Newton County as a representative. If the Legislature had started, that’s what he was elected by the people of this county to do and that’s where he needed to be.
“Maybe it was a misjudgment on my part, but I felt the offer for compensation was reasonable and we didn’t pull Public Works off the roadways. They were already over there, and they were told to finish what they were working on first.”
Even though the crew spread sand and moved two vehicles Monday, Holt wasn't at the Capitol, according to voting records. Tuesday's legislative session was canceled due to the icy conditions.
Holt, 46, a former chairman of the Newton County Republican Party, was first elected to the state house in 2004.
