U.S. 78 at Langley Road near Loganville fully reopened Tuesday morning after crews finished repairs resulting from last week's 48-inch water main burst, a Gwinnett County spokesman said.
The Thursday morning break buckled pavement on U.S. 78, one of Gwinnett’s major thoroughfares with an average daily traffic count of 34,196, county spokesman Joe Sorenson said.
Traffic through the area was restricted into three lanes from the normal four lanes plus a middle turning lane while repairs were made.
The break also forced the temporary evacuation of 20 homes in the nearby Gwinnett Estates mobile home park. The residents were allowed to return to their homes the following morning, and contractor J.D. Stevens Inc. finished repairing the broken pipe by Friday afternoon.
Silverline Paving & Construction Inc. handled the street repaving, Sorenson said. The state Department of Transportation was on site to approve the work.
The cost of repairs will not be known until Silverline submits its final bill, based on fixed rates previously approved as part of its on-call contract with the county. The Gwinnett Department of Water resources will pay the bill, Sorenson said.
