Nearly a week after getting hit by a mini-van on East College Avenue near the main entrance to Agnes Scott College, 12-year-old Lydia Cochran is in an induced coma at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
Her mother Rachel Cochran said Tuesday night that Lydia was taken off her sedation medication and may wake up as soon.
“The first step is getting her coherent and getting her off the ventilator,” Rachel Cochran said. “But after that nobody’s talking about brain function or neurology. Doctors are pretty tight lipped, but I feel like we’re getting the vibe there could be a full recovery.”
Lydia is a seventh grader at Decatur’s Renfroe Middle, a skate boarder and member of the school’s First Lego League Robotics team.
It’s not known if Lydia was skateboarding or walking home (her skateboard was never found), when she was hit around 8:15 p.m. Dec. 16, striking her head on the windshield while also fracturing her leg. She was about 100 feet east of South McDonough Street and therefore not within a crosswalk.
The driver of the van remained on the scene and wasn’t charged.
Lydia is scheduled for transfer to Scottish Rite Hospital for rehabilitation, though her mother doesn’t yet know when that’ll happen.
As of Tuesday night a Go Fund Me account set up for Lydia’s medical expenses has raised $16,916.
