Leaders at Regent University in Virginia said Wednesday they are filing a federal trademark infringement complaint against the State Board of Regents because of its decision to name two merged Augusta colleges Georgia Regents University.

Prior to the board's vote the Virginia Beach school urged Georgia to consider another name, explaining they had trademarked the "Regent" name.

"Regent University has consistently taken steps to protect its trademarked name," President Carlos Campo said. "We have respect for the Georgia Board of Regents, but we believe that their selection of the name Georgia Regents University is an unfortunate infringement of our valuable federally registered trademark."

Georgia Regents University was the approved name for when Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities consolidate.

University System of Georgia spokesman John Millsaps said the board does not comment on potential litigation.
