Recount in DeKalb school board election

The election for one of the school board districts in DeKalb County was close enough for a recount, and third place candidate Jesse “Jay” Cunningham wants one.

The former board member, ousted by Gov. Nathan Deal, got 3,372 votes, 74 shy of Vickie Turner. The law allows a recount when the margin is within one percent. Cunningham got 27.51 percent to Turner’s 28.03 in the District 5 election.

The DeKalb Board of Registration & Elections will start the count, open to the public, at 10 a.m. at 4380 Memorial Drive, Suite 300, Decatur.

If the recount doesn’t change the outcome, Turner will be in the July 22 runoff with lead candidate Thad Mayfield, whom Deal appointed to replace Cunningham. Mayfield got 35.95 percent of the vote.

The school board race is non-partisan, so the primary runoff will serve as the general election. Information: http://www.dekalbvotes.com or 404-298-4020. Return to www.ajc.com for updates.
