Rain moved into metro Atlanta Tuesday morning, while in the mountain counties, some of the precipitation was falling as snow.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said snow was reported “around Ellijay and up toward Blairsville and in that area.”
Temperatures before daybreak were in the 40s across metro Atlanta, but were in the low to mid-30s in extreme north Georgia, where the snow was reported.
A winter weather advisory was in effect for Rabun County in the northeast corner of the state until 10 a.m., calling for several inches of snow accumulation at the higher elevations and a dusting to 2 inches in the mountain valleys.
The National Weather Service said patchy ice was possible on bridges and overpasses across Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin and White counties.
School officials in Towns County delayed the start of classes for two hours Tuesday, and Union County schools were operating on a three-hour delay.
The rain moved into metro Atlanta from the west between 4 and 5 a.m., with rainfall totals during the first hour or so ranging from about a tenth of an inch to more than a quarter-inch.
Minton said the rain should end by late morning, with peeks of sunshine possible by Tuesday afternoon, when highs will reach the mid-50s.
Wednesday should be sunny and cooler, with highs in the low 50s after morning lows in the upper 20s, Minton said.
The sunny skies should last through Thursday before another rain system moves into metro Atlanta Friday and Saturday. Minton put the chance of rain at 80 percent for Friday and 50 percent on Saturday.
Late-week highs should be in the upper 50s, with lows in the 40s, Minton said.
